As Brian Nixon reports in a brief obituary,
David Noel Freedman quietly passed away with family at his side on Tuesday, April
8th. Many will concur with Brian’s last sentence: “What impressed me more than
his encyclopedic knowledge were his humility, humor, and thoughtfulness.” The
title of the remembrance is appropriate: Divine Commitment: David Noel Freedman,
1922-2008.
I cannot help but remember the time I gave a
paper in Ann Arbor, back when he taught there and mentored an amazing number of
students. As soon as I finished delivering the paper, Freedman was at my side,
asking questions and speaking words of encouragement. His intense love of the entire
fact of scripture – its smallest details up to and including the One whose
commitment it reflects – was a thing to behold.
