Kutsko is the new executive director of the Society of Biblical
Literature. He has written a letter to all SBL members in response to the
discussion generated by Ron Hendel’s op-ed in BAR in which Hendel explained his
reasons for letting his SBL membership lapse. Go here,
here and
here for
examples of the discussion Hendel’s piece set in motion. Kutsko’s letter
clarifies a number of points and offers a way forward.
I’m not certain the letter is meant to be the point of departure
for online conversation about SBL and its future. If the letter is posted
online or permission is granted to quote from and discuss it on the
God-forsaken internet, then I have a post or two just waiting to hit the
cybersphere.
With all due respect (and I admit that I do not have much) I think that all this discussion started by Hendel is "much ado about nothing."
I can explain my point of view - but I do not think it is worth my time!
