Happy New Year everyone! This roundup is a little late in coming. The head on the cord connecting my laptop to the server had to be replaced. But here we are.
Paul Kuritz of Opinions reviews The Dark Knight. Gotta see
that movie.
Mark Olson of Pseudo-Polymath in this post picks up on
Dostoevsky’s concept of ontological freedom. A favorite example of mine (but
read Dostoevsky’s novels for yet harder-hitting examples): it was the only kind
of freedom Monica the mother of Augustine had while married to a godless
husband who abused her – wives in Roman antiquity enjoyed few legal freedoms - but
she used it to save him and save herself, and for that reason is the patron saint
of victims of abuse.
Henry Neufeld of Participatory Bible Study reflects
on Bible translations. Check
the comments! Looking to read through the Bible in the new year, in a
translation you are as yet unfamiliar with? Check out Henry’s Bible Version Selection Tool. Click
on a particular translation for a one-paragraph description of same.
Raffi Shahinian of Parables of a Prodigal
World plays up his popular Top
10 emergent/ missional/ post-evangelical predictions for 2009. It really is
a great collection of links. Thanks, Raffi.
Wickle in the
hierarchy of sin talks about how some sins are worse than others, but he’s
not sure homosexuality is the worst category. This goes back to an earlier post by
OneMom entitled The evil democrats
(sarcastic title).
Jeremy Pierce tries to separate the wheat
from the chaff in a post entitled opposition
to abortion and same-sex marriage. It is amazing how much nonsense is
spouted by opponents of opponents of abortion and same-sex marriage. But as Jeremy
notes, there is plenty of nonsense they are reacting against.
Christmas messages: Allen Scott at Journey across the sky; Jason
Isbell at Tired Garden.
Astrid Lee at Therapeutic Reiki submits a
post entitled Got Jesus?
This site is a potpourri of feel-good proposals. I’ll bite my tongue right
there (anyone with a smile like Astrid’s is pretty disarming).
Nice roundup of items.
Please feel free to join us at HEART OF A READY WRITER, as we read through the whole Bible in the coming year - 2009.
