All of us should feel drawn, wrote Dulles, “to
a Christianity that is both evangelical and catholic.” For a fine set on online
essays penned by Dulles for First Things, go here. Here is his
1996 piece in which he implored Catholics to become more evangelical. Dulles was also a staunch defender of the doctrine of biblical inerrancy.
In this review,
he reduced the famous volume by Rogers and McKim to tatters. The review ought
to be required reading by all those who wish to speak in a responsible manner
about the authority of Scripture.
The Cardinal was an enthusiastic supporter of the Evangelical Catholic movement, a tender wing of the church universal I feel a great affinity with. From a press release:
We had a great institute this April [2007, in Madison WI]. Our beloved
Cardinal Avery Dulles, as well as Monsigneur Swetland and a host of great
presenters from home and around the country gathered to help us embrace the New
Evangelization and carry the message of Christ to all.
What is an evangelical Catholic? Here
you go.
