Amy-Jill Levine, for those who don’t know, is
a Jewish scholar of the New Testament. An excellent speaker, she is a joy to
listen to. Ben Witherington is another top-notch NT
scholar. He also maintains an excellent blog. Courtesy of the Duke Socratic Club, you can
listen to the two, er, duke it out via an audio
file. The chief Pauline passages touching on the role of women are
discussed. Here are a couple of choice quotes:
“Paul has been badly misinterpreted for a
long time.” Ben Witherington
“Paul’s convoluted both/and arguments are
rhetorically fabulous.” Amy-Jill Levine
If you want to know who I agree with more, it’s the Kiwi, Douglas Campbell, who moderates the discussion.
Thank you for this very interesting link. I never would have found it on my own.
I must say that I have long felt that Witherington is not of the first rank and is sloppy in his writing and thinking, so I am counting on Amy-Jill wiping up the floor with him.
