As Brian Nixon reports in a brief obituary, David Noel Freedman quietly passed away with family at his side on Tuesday, April 8th. Many will concur with Brian’s last sentence: “What impressed me more than his encyclopedic knowledge were his humility, humor, and thoughtfulness.” The title of the remembrance is appropriate: Divine Commitment: David Noel Freedman, 1922-2008.
I cannot help but remember the time I gave a paper in Ann Arbor, back when he taught there and mentored an amazing number of students. As soon as I finished delivering the paper, Freedman was at my side, asking questions and speaking words of encouragement. His intense love of the entire fact of scripture – its smallest details up to and including the One whose commitment it reflects – was a thing to behold.
