I imagine they already are.
There are scientists who think that the material world generated itself, as it were; there are those, a tiny minority, who think in terms of Intelligent Design; then there are those who think of the material world as an apparent example of technology, in terms of intelligent design with a small "i" and "d."
There are lots of scientists in the last category. They don't make a stink like IDers. IDers seem to want to give PZMyers a run for his money in terms of the puerile rhetoric department. They make lovely bedfellows.
Gaskell, it seems to me, hypothesizes intelligent design, not ID. There is a subtle, vast difference.
