All the best books, of course, are printed in Germany. But they cost an arm and a leg. It’s nice to see that German publishers are beginning to send bloggers review copies of their excellent stock. Below the jump, an image of an address label of a package I just received. Merry Christmas to me.

Or, you know, no image at all ;). And all the best books are not published in Germany, lots of great ones come from American and British presses, and some of the volumes in series like BZAW or VTSup are duds. You're right about the expensive part though, so good on them for branching out into the blogging world. Though pretty soon I'm gonna have trouble talking you folks into writing reviews for the journal I work for aren't I?

Hi Colin,
That's weird. First the image worked and now it doesn't. I'll have to try again.
There are many great books published everywhere. And plenty of bad ones, too. What I like about books published in Germany and Belgium and Switzerland and a few other places is that they are obviously built to last, on quality paper, with quality binding. That counts for something.

Yes, the folks at Mohr Siebeck are great. I requested a title and it arrived within a week--all the way from Germany! Not to mention the price tag on the their books!

Yes John, if you mean the quality of the actual physical books themselves, it's hard to beat the German houses. There's just something about the way a well-bound, lovely, cloth book feels. And yes, they last. That's how all of the major commentaries and reference works should be bound in my opinion, by sigh, 'tis not to be.
