A piece by Michael Handelzalts, who writes on topics I love, such as books in Hebrew and Jewish theater, is the best I’ve ever read on what’s in a name, in particular, the name Tamar. I’ve been noticing that Israelis have begun to draw Jesus into their positive web of associations. A predictable development, if you ask me. Go here for a splendid read.
A hint to rabbis, priests, and pastors who read this post. For a wedding, it's worth composing a biblical-historical-mystical riff on the names of bride and groom. It’s the kind of thing people take into themselves and remember for a long time.
I was also happy to note that the Haaretz
article reads at one point: “God slayed him.” How did that get past the copy
editor? For a great discussion, go here.
I wonder what Chris Heard
thinks about this one.
